Dringende oproep om Suriname groen te houden

By | Press Release, Publication

Bron: WWF Germany. (2023). Extracted Forests. Unearthing the role of mining-related deforestation as a driver of global deforestation.

By | Press Release, Publication

LAGERE SCHOOL AMATOPO FEESTELIJK GEOPEND

By | Press Release

Student Research assignment: Local knowledge for indicating climate change in Suriname

By | Press Release, Publication

Green Growth Suriname Foundation has an opportunity for a student research assignment, starting  November 2021.

Background
Climate change will have a profound effect on Suriname. Predictions for Suriname as a whole show that with doubling of Carbon Dioxide by the year 2100, the mean annual temperature increases by 2.6 centigrade and the mean annual precipitation will decrease about 4.7% compared to the last 20-30 years (Nurmohamed, 2008). Even more important are the factors other than warming, including changes in rainfall pattern and frequency that is expected to have a larger scale effect than biotic interactions between species and soil variations (Borchert, 1998). The projected shift in rainfall patterns – specifically the length of the dry season – is identified as the key-controller for tropical forest climatic change (Hutyra et al, 2005). Such predictions are consistent with the finding that the dry season between the months of May-December will become dryer with 24% by 2080 in Suriname (Nurmohamed, 2008).

However, accurate predictions about the effects of climate are difficult to capture in the abstract models used nowadays (Da Silva,Werth & Arissar, 2008). The complex nature of climate is not well understood, often because it is removed from its social context (Weber, 2006; Leiserowitz, 2006; Vedwan & Rhoades, 2001; Vogel & O’Brien, 2006). People that have lived in a specific place for long periods of time (>10 years) have observed change in their immediate environment. These local peoples have developed and interchanged practical instruments and normative knowledge about the ecological, socio-economic and cultural environment (Agrawal, 1995).  They rely on experience and have identified indicators in their surroundings. These dynamic, inside-out strategies are a valuable point of departure for the design of present-day adaptive resource management strategies (Parlee & Fikret, 2006).

Suriname provides a unique location to study climate change. A primary aim of this research is to study the traditional system in recognizing and predicting ecosystem alterations. With this research indicators will be identified based on local concepts, knowledge and practices to foresee climate-related hazards. Specific objectives are to 1) Identify verifiable forest indicators for seasonal climate change and 2) Define the traditional knowledge system as it relates to understanding climate change.

Research goal
The overall goal of the project is to study the traditional system in recognizing and predicting ecosystem alterations. A better understanding of how local peoples perceive and manage local ecosystems in changing climate is an anticipated result of this research. We plan to answer the following research questions: What are the indicators used by local peoples for indicating seasonality? Can these traditional indicators be used as a prediction tool for change for future use?

Student Opportunity
Students will work together with a PhD. level researcher to answer the research questions. In practice, students will visit different stakeholders and interview them on the indicators. Also, students will work together with the lead researcher to gather information from the field in social mapping exercises, as well as other research methods. The work will eventually be published in an academic journal with mentioning of students and other contributors.

The period for collaboration in this research project is a minimum of 3 months and can go as long as the student needs to complete his/her project. Students will receive a stipend of U$ 500 for contributing to this research project which will be used for transportation and professional fees.

Students who are interested can contact us via email: gwen@greengrowthsuriname.org

GGS and Satelligence extend satellite monitoring in Suriname

By | Press Release

A recent study into tech-assisted forest governance found that technology based forest monitoring could lead to a 51% decrease in deforestation in the first year and a 21% decrease the following year. The study was published by the Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences and aimed to compare communities who had shifted to tech-based approach to those who had not. The implication being that a shift to tech monitoring offers a low cost, high return strategy for combating climate change.

Green Growth Suriname (GGS) is dedicated to introducing innovative ways to support forest governance. Suriname’s forest cover is experiencing increasing pressure through logging, goldmining and infrastructure. The nation’s objective is to remain the most forested country on earth by balancing development and conservation.

In its role to help build forest governance, GGS teamed up with Satelligence in 2019 to monitor loss of forest cover through satellite data from multiple satellites as input in the so-called logging approved production area of the country (25% of land surface). Satelligence uses artificial intelligence to do cloud-based processing of radar and optical satellite images to ensure optimum information density.

After a pilot year, GGS is now happy to announce that they will continue to work with Satelligence for an additional two years increasing the monitoring area to cover the entire country.

Satelligence shares their satellite data with Surinamese governance institutes, while a summary of the data is regularly shared with the public via a webseries called Busi Taki. Since 2020, citizens have been armed with the means to help slow the country’s rates of deforestation. Via the citizen science application Green Growth Forests they can take pictures of illegal logging or deforestation sites and upload these in the app. Using Green Growth Forests, we were able to identify cases of deforestation outside of our original scope, and thus we saw the need to increase our area of operations in the country.

With this new initiative, we aim to support the Government with an extra data set and at the same time empower tribal and indigenous communities to protect the pristine land that they call home. Our tech will provide them with new insights into the health of their forests and avoid encroachment. The communities that live there are uniquely equipped to do so as they provide supply-chain monitoring efforts with much needed “eyes on the ground”. Through a combination of ancient indigenous knowledge and cutting-edge tech, GGS foresees a comprehensive effort to manage the rainforest, which is becoming increasingly important for human life on our planet.

This cooperation is made possible by funding from the Swedish Postcode Foundation and support from Re:Wild.

Under the extended contract, Satelligence will provide satellite imagery covering the full country

New product launch in Alalapadu: Tuhka roasted nuts

By | Press Release

New product launch in Alalapadu: Tuhka roasted nuts

On July 5, 2021, indigenous village Alalapadu introduced roasted nuts as a product extension of its TUHKA brand. A new product line has been added to the now well-known Tuhka oil, from the indigenous village of Alalapadu in South Suriname: roasted nuts or ‘roasted nuts’. These nuts are intended for consumption and have a positive impact on the immune system due to their richness in fiber, protein and selenium (particularly good for cardiovascular diseases and the prostate).

The local production facility has become the main source of income for the community in Alalapadu. With every purchase of Tuhka oil or Tuhka Roasted Nuts, the consumer contributes directly to being able to provide for the own livelihood of the more than 120 residents in Alalapadu.

The community of Alalapadu is very proud of this development during the challenging covid-19 period. In their own statement (see video), the employees of the Tuhka Foundation in Alalapadu explain what production entails in terms of deployment, working hours and processing process. They also emphasize how important production is for their livelihood, as this community is one of the most remote villages in Suriname.

With financial support from the Amazon Forest Fund, Green Growth Suriname (GGS), in collaboration with local Tuhka Foundation in Alalapadu and Conservation International Suriname (CIS), has developed the ‘roasted nuts’ production line in 10 months. “The tremendous drive of the community itself has made this project possible. We are pleased that we have been able to contribute to a sustainable future for this small Trio community,” said Gwendolyn Smith of GGS. In the coming months, work  on the Tuhka Roasted Nuts will continue with funding from the French Government through the Our Future Forest – Amazonia Verde project.

Since 2017,  the community of Alalapadu has committed itself through a Conservation Agreement to protect the forest surrounding the village of Alalapadu (235,000 ha). This area includes the unique Brazilian nut trees. Ever since, CI-Suriname has been working to support Alalapadu in the sustainable production of Brazil nut related products, as part of the TWTIS program (Trio Wayana Nature Conservation in South Suriname in Development).

This new development fulfills the government’s ambition to further develop non-timber forest products (NTFPs) as a sector. Forest by-products are all products from forests with the exception of wood.

The Tuhka Roasted Nuts are for sale at various supermarkets and drugstores and via the webshop avoda.sr. The first variant of the Tuhka Roasted Nuts to be introduced is the unsalted pure nut, with no additives. The nuts are packed in bags of 200 grams. HEM Suriname NV is the official distributor. Information about the health benefits and points of sale of both Tuhka Roasted Nuts and Tuhka oil can be found on the Tuhka website www.tuhka.sr and via HEM Suriname NV on telephone number 472-351.

Green Growth Champions start gardening project for children’s homes

By | Press Release

Starting at International Environment Day, June 5, 2021, the Green Growth Champions will start their own social environmental project: nature-friendly gardening with children. They will collect money to provide as many children’s homes as possible with mobile garden boxes, seeds, plant material and training so that they can provide for their own healthy food in a sustainable way.

The Green Growth Champions are four young Surinamese with a passion for nature who have been following an internal academy at the Green Growth Suriname Foundation for a year. The champions are Jeffrey Vanan, athlete; Christio Wijnhard, presenter Busi Taki; Glynis Williams, master student Sustainable Management; and Byciel Watsaam, artist. At the ‘academy’, they receive monthly presentations from professionals about nature related themes. There have been lectures about the Environmental Framework Act, about endangered animals, about lifestyles of indigenous people, about tribes, about climate financing, about the origin of the environment field in Suriname and the development since then.

After the last session, the idea arose among the Green Growth Champions to start their own environmental project. In particular, they wanted to carry out a project that also had a social impact, especially given the current difficult circumstances with COVID-19 and the economy. The project therefore had to contribute to nature, contribute to relieving economic pressure and also be healthy.

Eating from your own garden is healthier, cheaper and more environmentally friendly. Plus gardening is an important life skill. The project has thus been set up in such a way that it contributes to:

  • mental health, because gardening has a therapeutic effect
  • physical health and immunity through healthy food
  • the environment by learning to grow in an environmentally friendly way, without pesticides
  • the budget of the homes

The production cost of a garden box is approximately SRD 500. The training component will be carried out with the support of agricultural professionals. Support the Green Growth Champions by making a contribution and help them help as many children’s homes as possible with healthy food… especially now!

You can deposit your contribution into the account of Stichting Groene Groei Suriname, stating “tuinbakken project” via Finabank (SRD) 1000.528.834 or Finabank (USD) 1000.526.181

In the next Busi Taki episode of Friday 11 June, the Green Growth Champions will introduce themselves further. In the third Busi Taki episode of season 2, on June 19, with as topic ‘the healing power of the forest’, a therapeutic gardening project is discussed. The latter is the basis for the Green Growth Champions garden planter project.

Plus tuinieren is een belangrijke life skill.

By | Press Release

Environment Financing Training for policy-makers on its way

Whether sustainability and green finance should be the direction for Suriname …? The world has already answered that. The question now is: how does Suriname implement a green financing strategy, in particular on the basis of its 93% forest cover.
Silvano Tjong-Ahin, Minister of Spatial Planning and the Environment, said “we are very interested in climate finance. As a country, we may have financial difficulties, but we should not put our valuable forest up for sale. So patience and thinking about what we want to decide on, is of the essence. We realize that we have a responsibility to the community and that we have to make a choice with the greatest benefit for the community… not just for now, but certainly for future generations. ”

On Wednesday May 5th 2021, the Minister of Spatial Planning and the Environment kicked-off the environmental finance training. In four sessions, over 30 policymakers from various ministries and government institutions will gain in-depth knowledge of financing concepts relating to the environment and nature. This involves mechanisms such as carbon credits, debt for nature swaps and biodiversity offsets, moreover, speakers from multilateral bodies will also indicate what their focus will be in the coming years and how Suriname could benefit.

The training is a follow-up to an assessment into historical environmental funding paid to Suriname, as well as of funding sources that have not yet been used. After the training, an advisory report will be completed on the basis of which the government can continue to shape its green financing policy.

In June, the Ministry of Spatial Planning and the Environment will present its renewed environmental policy as part of the International Environment Day (5 June). “This is a document in development. This will also include a climate finance strategy. We must join forces with the few people we have: government, private sector, NGOs and individuals who are willing to protect our environment. I look forward to the participants in the training, together with the ministry, shaping this policy, ”said Minister Tjong-Ahin.

The assessments and training courses are organized by the Green Growth Suriname Foundation (GGS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Spatial Planning and the Environment and NIMOS.

The Suriname Nature Park Foundation, known as STINAPA, and the Green Growth Suriname Foundation (GGS) signed a cooperation agreement on 06 May 2021. The collaboration will include:

  1. Research and applied science
  2. Training and workshops
  3. Education and awareness

Part of the collaboration is a scientific inventory of the existing flora and fauna in the Cultuurtuin (an urban green park in Paramaribo) through field research and existing literature. Based on the inventory, the government will be formally asked to protect the Cultuurtuin area, through an IUCN category for protected nature areas or other status.
